Squeaky
Door Hinges |
|
Spray a little WD-40 onto
the hinges, moving the door
back and forth to work in
the lubricant. Or try
rubbing the hinges with
petroleum jelly. If these
tricks don’t work, lift the
hinge pins about halfway and
lubricate them with
three-in-one oil, using a
rag to catch drips. |
|
Washing
Chandeliers |
|
Allow the fixture to cool.
Wear a pair of white cotton
gloves one dry, one dampened
with glass cleaner. (For
crystal, use one part
rubbing alcohol to three
parts distilled water.) Wipe
each prism with the damp
glove, then the dry one. |
|
Whitening
Bathtub Stains |
|
Combine equal amounts of
cream of tartar and baking
soda with enough lemon juice
to make a paste. Rub the
mixture into the stain with
your fingers or a soft
cloth. Let sit for a half
hour, then rinse well with
water. |
|
Plumping
Deflated Cushions |
|
Put the deflated cushions
and pillows outside in the
sun for few hours, flipping
them halfway through. The
sun will help evaporate the
moisture that gets into the
filling over time, and the
cushions should plump up
nicely. |
|
Low
Pressure Shower |
|
If your shower power just
not what it used to be, the
showerhead could be clogged
with mineral deposits. No
need to replace it, though.
Gently unscrew it from the
pipe and soak it overnight
in vinegar. Then wrap new
Teflon tape clockwise around
the pipe threads and turn
the head back into place. |
|
Walkway
Lights |
|
You can brighten your
walkway by installing
solar-powered lights, a
quick, no-wiring-needed way
to illuminate dark walkways.
Available in an array of
styles, they use
photovoltaic cells to soak
up the sun's energy, which
gets stored in a battery
that powers the bulbs after
dark. |
|
Fixing
Wallpaper |
|
With a knife, smear
wallpaper paste onto a piece
of writing paper. Rub the
paper against the underside
of the peeling section. You
can also use a thin paint
brush. Press the wallpaper
against the wall. Slide the
writing paper out and smooth
away bubbles with a clean
cloth. |
|
Stuck
Light Bulbs |
|
Cut a duct tape strip about
8 inches long and get as
much of it on the glass as
you can. Squeeze the tape in
the center so that it forms
a tab hanging down an inch
in the middle of the light,
then press the rest of the
tape against the bulb to
create more friction. Now
just twist that tape tab to
the left, and you should
feel the light bulb begin to
rotate out of the socket. |
|
Cleaning
Shower Doors |
|
Rubbing a teaspoon of lemon
oil on glass shower doors
twice a month causes water
to bead up and roll off. Or,
try Rain-X Original Glass
Treatment, a car-care
product made to keep
rainwater off your
windshield. Use it twice a
year. |
|
Removing
Wood Scratches |
|
Mix equal parts olive oil
and vinegar, which work
together to remove dirt,
moisturize, and shine wood.
Pour a little directly onto
the scratch. Let the polish
soak in for 24 hours, then
wipe off. Repeat until the
scratch disappears. |
|
Disinfecting Kitchen Sponge |
|
We all know that sponges can
be a breeding ground for
bacteria. Disinfect yours
every night by squeezing it
out and microwaving it on
high for a minute. When it’s
shredded and smelly, replace
it. |
|
Car Trunk
Organizer |
|
Stuff in the trunk of the
car piles up easily, and
your trunk becomes missy.
Keeping a car trunk
organizer helps keep the
back of your car tidy and
makes your life easier when
you want to empty the trunk
for cleaning or when
commuting someone to the
airport. |
|
Insufficient Hot Water |
|
If the water heater runs out
of hot water too quickly,
increase the temperature on
the water heater thermostat.
If the temperature is set on
the highest setting, flush
the water heater using a
garden hose attached to the
drain valve. Keep flushing
until the running water is
clear. |
|
Dishwasher Door Leakage |
|
Liquid soap suds cause
leakage around the door.
Switching to powder soap
will solve this problem. If
you have been using liquid
soap, place a cup of vinegar
in the dishwasher and run it
through a cycle. This will
remove the remaining liquid
soap from the system. |
|
Garbage
Disposal Drainage |
|
If the garbage disposal is
draining slowly, pour 1 cup
each of baking soda, salt &
vinegar. Pour baking soda &
salt into drain, immediately
followed by vinegar. Let sit
for approximately 15-20
minutes. Then pour a pot of
boiling water down the drain
to flush the pipes out. |
|
Best
Watering Times |
|
Early morning is the best
time. Early evening would be
the second best option.
Note: In the spring and
fall, the evening coolness
may create fungus. Never
water in the middle of the
day. |
|
Dirty Air
Filters |
|
Dirty air filters affect the
efficiency of your Heating
and cooling system and might
cause an increase in your
gas and electricity bills.
For the most efficient
system, it is recommended
that the filter be changed
every 30 days. Remove the
old filter and slip in the
new one. |
|
Blistered
Bathroom Paint |
|
The paint on the bathroom
ceiling can, over time,
blister and peel, allowing
heat and moisture to reach
ceiling drywall. This is no
good. Fix this by simply
scraping off the old paint,
and applying a durable,
moisture-resistant, exterior
paint. No more peeling. |
|
Stuck Jar
Lid |
|
The problem is often caused
by a partial vacuum inside
the jar, leading to air
pressure preventing the lid
being removed. Try heating
the jar with an air dryer or
by putting the jar in a pot
of hot water. This should
equalize the pressure inside
and outside the jar and
solve the problem. |
|
Removing
Sticky Labels |
|
Create a mixture of equal
parts baking soda and
cooking oil. Put the mixture
on top of the label you want
to remove. Wait at least 30
minutes. Then, scrub off the
bottle and the glue is gone.
Finally, wash the bottle to
remove the oil and baking
soda. |
